Hand-rearing AT HAIDLHOF
We hand-raised 10 young ravens to study key aspects of their social, cognitive, and communicative development. The chicks were selected from nests of captive breeding pairs at Haidlhof Research Station, the Konrad Lorenz Research Center, Zoo Vienna, and Alpenzoo Innsbruck. From nests containing four chicks, two were hand-raised while two remained with their parents. This unique design allows us to directly compare the developmental trajectories of siblings growing up either in family groups with their parents or in peer groups under human foster care.
After fledging, we introduce them to cognitive and behavioral tasks in a playful and positive environment. Establishing positive experiences early in life helps ensure that they remain comfortable engaging in experimental research and interacting with the testing environment.

I am interested in social behavior and the evolution of complex cognition. I pursue an integrative approach, combining concepts and methods of behavioral biology and comparative psychology and I am probably most renowned for my long-term program on ravens studied under captive and field conditions.
